Recording and sharing your final (4th) interview using the StoryCorps App

About StoryCorps

Storycorps is an American non-profit organisation that aims “to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of our lives”. They do this to “remind one another of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters”. At the same time, Storycorps is creating an invaluable archive for future generations.

The StoryCorps cellphone app allows you to:

  1. design an interview (selecting questions from the StoryCorps database of questions or adding your own);
  2. use your phone to guide and record your interview, and 3) take a picture and automatically upload it to the StoryCorps online archive.

If you have time you will find it very rewarding to watch this wonderful and inspiring Ted Talk about Storycorps:

How using the app will help us to get more people involved:

Once you have recorded your interview you will have the option of uploading it to the Storycorps.me online library. If you upload it with the keywords: DGMTEMBRACE (under the organisation category) we will be able to find it and add it to our records. By doing this, you and the mother/caregiver will give us permission to use the interview or parts of it to help to encourage other people to get involved. The more people start supporting the optimal development of children, the greater the change that we can bring about in South Africa. If you include your email address or how you can be contacted when you are prompted to record your name, we will share any information that we would like to use from your interview with you first.

All that you need to use the app for the final interview:

  • You can download the free app for iPhone or Android here.
  • 5 Steps to Recording Your StoryCorps App Interview
  • See our suggested interview questions for the 4th meeting – and where to find it on the Storycorps app – here. Ask a question and then both of you answer the same question in turn.
  • Read through the helpful hints provided on the app before you start.
  • First do a test – run with a family member or friend.
  • Recording your interview while looking after a busy toddler might be challenging. See if the mother is able to bring someone along who can look after the child while you are making this recording. Or see if you can find someone to look after the child. Take a print – out of the questions with you in case you are not able to record/use the app.
